Inclusive Education in Tanzania

In February 2023, the Team visited Child Support Tanzania, our partner in Mbeya, Tanzania, to support the final evaluation of a project funded by Book Aid International.

The Quality School Libraries for All project opened inclusive libraries in three primary schools in Mbeya, giving nearly 3,000 children with and without disabilities access to quality books and other resources. The aim of the project was to encourage all children to read regularly at school through a safe, inclusive library space with an exciting collection of primary level storybooks, non-fiction subject books and locally published Kiswahili books.

The project also engages with teachers and parents to change perceptions, attitudes and behaviours towards children with disabilities and their learning potential.

With the libraries up and running, the team looked to hear feedback from all who are now using the libraries, with teachers at the schools reporting that they had already seen improvements in the learning of children in class and their reading skills. The children the Team spoke to were also excited to talk about their favourite books. To find out more about CST and our impact in Tanzania, click below.
