Day of the African Child 2024

Earlier this year, we celebrated the Day of the African Child 2024 and demanded that every child with a disability receives an education.

The International Day of the African Child has been celebrated on June 16 every year since 1991, when it was first initiated by the Organisation of African Unity. It honours those who participated in the Soweto Uprising in 1976. It also raises awareness of the continuing need for improvement in education provided to African children.

We celebrated this year’s theme of Education for All Children in Africa: The Time is Now. And we must do more.

Children with disabilities are twice as likely to never attend school. Of those lucky enough to start, most drop out after a few months due to feelings of exclusion or stigma. This exclusion and invisibility make them uniquely vulnerable, with a lack of basic education leading to potential financial deprivation.

While there has been substantial progress in access to education over recent decades, children with disabilities have continued to fall through the net and are being left behind.

Able Child and the Able Child Africa Network work to ensure that children and young people with disabilities have access to an education and the services they need to succeed. Together, we can ensure that no child with a disability is left behind.
