Bruno’s Story

Bruno is a 12 year old boy living in Rwanda. He has a physical disability which means mobility can be a challenge for him, and from a young age, he has found it difficult to walk.

Thanks to extensive physiotherapy, his muscle development and motor skills have greatly improved. Able Child support a network of organisations in Africa to protect, educate and amplify the voices of children and young people with disabilities. Since 2016, Able Child have been working with Uwezo Youth Empowerment (UWEZO) to support children with disabilities to stand up for their rights to access inclusive education and accessible child protection systems.

Through our joint mentorship programme, which trains young people with disabilities to mentor other children and young people with disabilities, Bruno received crucial support and companionship from a young person with a disability who truly understood and empathised with him. His mentor had faced similar challenges and had once been a mentee themselves, benefiting from the same kind of support. This shared experience created a supportive environment where Bruno could openly share his journey with someone who had walked the same path.

As part of this project, Bruno was identified to take part in the mentorship programme. Initially, he was out of school, however through the project he has now been successfully enrolled into school and with the support of UWEZO, he has become one of the top students in his class.

Together, we can transform the lives of more children like Bruno.
